My doctor has never tested me for prostatitis, why not?

The only definitive diagnosis for prostatitis is through an examination of the prostatic fluid which is obtained during the DRE. The fluid is viewed under a 400 power microscope and white blood cells are counted. If a bacterial prostatitis is suspected, a bacterial culture will be grown. This is unusual as the vast majority of cases of prostatitis is non-bacterial.

What is a PSA test?

PSA stand for Prostate Specific Antigen.  PSA is a protein produced by cells of the prostate gland.  This protein can be an indicator of prostatitis or prostate cancer.  The PSA test measures the level of PSA in a man’s blood.  For this test, a blood sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis. The results are usually reported as nanograms of PSA per milliliter(ng/mL) of blood.  If a PSA score is above a 1, this could be an indicator of ailment, but not in all cases.
