Many studies have shown a direct benefit from the use of powerful antioxidant polyphenols, such as curcumin, quercitin, grape seed extract and green tea extract in stopping the proliferation of prostate cancer cells thereby controlling prostate cancer cell growth.

The medicinal and nutritional value of grapes (Vitis vinifera) has been heralded for thousands of years. Egyptians consumed this fruit at least 6,000 years ago, and several ancient Greek philosophers praised the healing power of grapes -- usually in the form of wine. Seedless varieties were developed to appeal to fickle consumers, but researchers are now discovering that many of the health properties of grapes may actually come from the seeds themselves.

A recent study of healthy volunteers found that supplementation with grape seed extract substantially increased levels of antioxidants in the blood. Free radicals occur naturally in the body, but environmental toxins (including ultraviolet light, radiation, smoke, certain prescription and non-prescription drugs, and air pollution) can also increase the number of these damaging particles. Free radicals are believed to contribute to the aging process as well as the development of a number of health problems, including heart disease and cancer. Antioxidants found in grape seeds can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause.Vitamin E, flavonoids, linoleic acid, and compounds called procyanidins are also concentrated in grape seeds.

The diet / nutrition in Quercetin and other flavonoids contained in fruits and vegetables have long been considered important in possibly helping prevent cancer and promote prostate health. People who eat more fruits and vegetables tend to have lower risk of some types of cancer. And animal and test-tube studies suggest that flavonoids do indeed have anti-cancer properties. Quercetin and other flavonoids have been shown in these studies to inhibit the growth of cancer cells from breast, colon, prostate, ovarian, endometrial, and lung tumors. Quercetin belongs to a group of plant pigments called flavonoids that give many fruits, flowers, and vegetables their color. Quercetin acts like an antihistamine and an anti-inflammatory, and may help protect against heart disease and cancer.

Green tea shows promise in cancer prevention research. Green Tea appears to have antitumor properties. Clinical studies have indicated that consumption of Green Tea may reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, including oral cancer, prostate cancer, and colon, stomach, and rectal cancers. In studies on animals, Green Tea's diet and nutrition support for prostate health has consistently demonstrated the ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in skin, lung, colon, liver and pancreatic cancer. Other research investigated the use of Green Tea as a treatment for cancer in the mammary glands and the colon. Rates for prostate cancer are much lower among Japanese and Chinese populations, leading to speculation that Green Tea consumption in the diet may serve to protect Asian men from the ravages of prostate cancer. Research on the effects of Green Tea and the prostate indicate that this may be the case.

In experiments on tumors, Curcumin was shown to "directly and irreversibly" affect the growth of new cancers. It appears to suppress the onset of tumors as well as their growth and metastasis. Doctors at the National Institute of Health are excited about the possibilities of using Curcumin to treat cancer. In their words, Curcumin is, "an exciting compound because it can be taken orally and may not have any side effects for cancer patients. Curcumin appears to slow or prevent the growth of prostate cancer, the most common cancer in American men. In a study of prostate cancer cells, Curcumin inhibited cell growth, thus demonstrating a potential for slowing the progression of prostate cancer. Researchers concluded that Curcumin may provide "an alternative, nontoxic" means of treating prostate cancer in men.
